Today, Snake Charmer and I had court

on old school gangster. He's 68

and had back to back DUII trials.

He likes the both of us.

During the lunch break, he explained,

"I got no beef with the police.

We both have jobs.It is my job

to commit crimes and its your job

to catch me. I can't fault

you for doing your job."

 

 

 

Describing the Latest Scrum

 

At court today, after describing another felonious scrum, a member of the grand jury said, "Weren't you here, last week for a fight?"

 Yeah, it's what I do. It is the district.

She said, "You must have some really good stories."

 

 

A Modicum of Common Courtesy

 

 

Last March, a woman drove down 2nd, in the dark, with her headlights off. As a courtesy, I flashed my headlights at her to remind the driver to turn her lights on. The woman responded by flipping me off.  I pulled her over. As I explained the stop, she said “I flipped you off because I hate all cops.“ I nodded, then issued her a cite. As I left the car, she told me to, "Fuck off!"

Today, at traffic court, the woman agreed with my account of the traffic stop, but asked the judge for a warning for the minor offense. 

The judge said by flashing my patrol car lights at her was the warning, and if she had a “modicum of common courtesy,” the outcome would have been different.

Then, he said considered giving her the enhanced judgement of $1000 for the citation, and as she sweated,  ruled on the base fine. 

 

 

 

Consequences, Part II

"Then does a future non-appearance lead to a warrant that is enforceable?"

 

Answer:

 

 Failing to Appear at the criminal citation date, the court issues a Cite-in-Lieu of custody warrant, meaning the wanted person, when next arrested, recieves another criminal summons telling them to appear at a future court date. If they fail to appear at that court date, another Cite-in-Lieu warrant is issued and so on.....

 

 

Resumption

 

The county has announced they will be re-starting traffic court for the first time in 15 months. Court Coordinator warned of a long back log of cases........

 

 

Number Four

 

At court, I testified at a DV trial. Per the DDA, it's only the fourth trial in the county since the pandemic outbreak. 

 

 

Issues and Errors

 

At court, at GJ for a weapon's charge, the vic's a no show. 

I call him.

Marcos, this Officer RD. You are suppose to be at court today.

"Yes, I called the DA on Wednesday and set up grand jury. They said they were sending me a link. I didn't get it, so I called this morning."

He was still waiting for the link.

I handed the phone to the ADA. They arranged for a Direct Present on a later date.

Time

 

Last night as I'm walking out to head home, Blaut flagged me down.

Last spring, I had helped him catch the perp during a rape in progress. 

He said, "The guy's already out. He got 180 days."
