A block off the High Street, a woman had called in a Welfare Check for her 23 year old daughter.
I called the mom first. She said her daughter is in a bad relationship and maybe using heroin. No one, not even her friends have heard from her in seven weeks.
Checking the location's call history, I saw a string of beefs in the spring and welfare check two days after Thanksgiving.
I pulled up the check and read it to the mother. In the call notes, the daughter had told the officer, "Tell my mother to mind her own business."
A young woman, returning from walking her pit, let me in to the building. We shared the elevator to the 7th floor. Exiting the elevator, the woman said, "Wait, are you here for me?"
Confirming her name, she asked, "My mother called?"
I nodded.
She said, "First, tell her I love her. I don't have a working phone right now, but I am doing well, but please tell her I love her, and will call her soon."
The "welfare check" is such a bear trap of a call now. I don't look forward to them.
