Medical Transport

 

Yesterday, Mike was in a hospital in Arizona for suicidal ideations.

They gave him a train ticket to the pond.

Tonight, he wanted to cut his wrist under a bridge off 9th.

We put him in an ambulance and sent him to the hospital.

 

 

Predictions

 

Tonight, a fatal shooting on 60th Avenue on the east side, was the city's 67th homicide of the year.  With three more murders, the number will tie the record set in 1987.

Working out, in the gym, at the end of shift, I predicted 77 by the end of the year. Paris thought there would be 81. Saber went with 90. 

Before defunding and 170 plus nights of civil unrest, in 2019, the city had 29 homicides.

 

 

Claims and Clean Needles.

 

In an alley, in the dark, 1066 and I stop a gal who'd threatened a sandwich shop worker with a hatchet.  She no longer has the hatchet, but she has a bag of clean rigs and unused crank pipe. She claims she clean, but the bulging abscesses, ready to burst, under the track marks on her arms say otherwise. 

 

 

 

A Social Experiment

 

In 1968, the pond had  800 sworn police officers. The city had a population of 380,000.

Today, the city has a population of 660,000 and there's a million and a half more people with in 30 miles.  We have 783 officers.

Seven officers are leaving a month. 87 more, including possibly me, are looking to retire in July.

It is looking like the city will have arounds 600 officers by August.

 

Planning

 

The department is looking how to deal with the loss of 87 officers eligible to retire next summer. The problem is they do not have plan to retain 706 officers who are not, but are rapidly burning out. 

 

 

Allocation

 

Per the Day's LT, the city has yet to allocate funds for the retire /rehire program and the process may take a few months. 

 

 

Words in the Hall

 

 

In a walk-up, on the 2nd floor, 1066 and I are listening for a whimpering dog on an Animal Call. 

On the door opposite, across the hall, we hear a man say, “Well then, I guess I’ll kill myself ...

I'll  use this dagger and …. cause one point of damage. “

 

1066 and I look at each other. I knock. A young man answers the door. 

 

Are you playing a game?

 

He says, “Yes,” and points to a laptop near the door. 

 

Good. When you say you are going kill yourself loud enough to heard in the hallway, we have to check.

 

 

 

 

Grammarly

 

Despite the intent to write clear and concise reports, per the Chief's Officer, officers are not allowed to use Grammarly. 

 

 

Retire / Rehire is Back

 

In an effort to stem the personnel exodus of the last two years, the Mayor announced  he is restarting the retire /rehire. With 80 slots available, he is hoping the program will be a quick way to bolster shift numbers.

I doubt more than a handful of officers will take the offer. 

 

 

 

 

A Parable

 

The ship is sinking.

The Captain says, " We need to redirect man power to correct address this."

The crew says, "The ship is sinking."

The Captain says, "We need to do more with less."

The crew says, "But, the ship is sinking." 

The Captain says, "I appreciate your hard work."

The crew says, "The ship is sinking faster." 

The Captain says,  "We have to pick our battles."

The crew says, "The ship is still sinking. What is the plan?"

The Captain says, "The plan is to have a plan."

The crew says, "When will we have a plan?"

The Captain says, "We are planning for July..."
