Fall

 

The monsoon season is here. It's warm, wet, and blustery. Trees fall. Drunks drive off roads. Shop keepers shoo off transients from the shelter of the store entry ways. 

I worked 34 hours in the last two days and spent two hours on the witness stand on solid robbery cases. 

Tuesday, I talked a jumper off a bridge. He held a sharp shard of glass against his jugular until he agreed to give and go to the hospital. 

Wednesday, I caught a stabbing suspect. He used a machete. Blood had splattered across his face and stream down his arms from his elbows to his wrists. 

Tonight, I struggled to stay away in the rain and wind. Calls kept me going. Being soaked in the storm helped.

Twenty-two retire this month. Two made probation.

The city ratified our contract. It will keep some from going, rehire the retired on two year contracts, and have a more attractive wage for new hires and laterals. 

 

 

 

 

Fall Qual

 

For Fall Range, I started

with a 4 inch long by two inch

wide grouping, but put most

 of my 25 yard shots in the 4 ring

and two over the shoulder in line.

 

Ejected brass from Beach Boy's

gun landed on my forearms

as we fired.

 

In the end, I shot a 92

and no burns from the brass.

The End of the Vics

 

To replace the Caprice Classics, the department started using Crown Vics in 1996.  They were a poor substitute. Over the years, Ford improved the car. By 2009, the Vic Interceptor was a good car. The cage was small, but the push bumper anchored to the chassis. 

Since Ford discontinued the car, departments have struggled to find a solid prowler. The department tried Chargers and Impalas. Neither worked. They bought into the Explorer SUV.  The cage is roomy. There is more space for gear.

I have been holding out, driving the last of the white Vics. 

Today, there were none.

Over the last year, I could count on taking an old car, cleaning it out on Monday, and be be the sole driver for the week.

One by one, the whiteys have been swapped out for SUVs. There is on left in the First Ave barn. There's a blue '11 and a single Impala. The rest are SUVs. 

I drove one tonight. The seat is too small. The MDT was buggy. 

I'm hoping for Vic to end the week. 

 

 

Time to Burn

 

At roll call, I was told I needed to burn

80 hours of vacation by the year's

end or lose the time. 

 

I pulled up the family schedule

on my iPad and started requesting

days when the shift is fat

and my daughter have the days

off from school.
