Thursday

 

Thursday's Afternoons Downtown Staffing at West:

A-Shifts runs from 1600-0200.

 

West Hills District One:

No Car

 

West Hills District Two:

The Sergeant calls for emergency OT. An Officer fills the shift from 1830 to 2230

 

West Hills District Three:

The Officer has mandatory training from roll call until 2130 hours.

 

Downtown District One:

The car is filled with two officers rotated in from a speciality unit. They go home at 2230 hours.

 

Downtown District Two:

Since Downtown District One has two officers, this district is left empty.

 

Downtown District Three:

The district is filled for a full shift.

 

Downtown District Four:

The Officer has mandatory training until 2130 hours.

 

Downtown District Five:

The Officer goes home at 2130 to take care of a sick family member. 

 

Downtown District Six:

The district is left unstaffed. 

 

Out of nine roster slots, only one is on the street for the full shift. 

Of 90 possible manpower hours, only 41.5 are filled on the street.

 

 

Numbers

The department is twenty-six officers below authorized staffing.

Between now and April 23rd of 2017, a maximum of twenty-three officers will make probation.

Per the Brass, out of 500 people who test for a position, twelve make it to the background stage.  Between one in fifteen to one in twenty pass their backgrounds checks.

Ninety are scheduled to retire in April. A handful of others are resigning in favor of working for other agencies.

 

 

Taking it Back

 

A drunk is raging in my prowler's cage.

 

He screaming how he's going to kill my grandmother.

"You know what I'm gownna do to a her?"

 

My grandmothers are dead.

Both of them.

One died in 1979,

the other in 2005.

 

He pauses.

 

 

"I take it back.

I don't wanna do anything to your dead grandmother."

Tis the Season.

 

My mom and dad made care packages for me to hand out the homeless. Each ziploc bag has a pair of socks, kleenex, hand warmers, toe warms, and a bit of food. I hand them out to whom I choose. The sheep among the wolves, those who wave, offer their hands, those who help, the cold and weary, but still trying.
