Yesterday, Wash and I responded to a disturbance in the West Village.
A seventeen year old wanted his mother's friend to leave the property. He went nose to nose with the man and flipped off the man's hat.
Wash pointed out the seventeen year old has no say in who his mother invites to their home.
I told the young man if the guest had punched him and broke his nose after he had hit off the man's hat, in the eyes if the law, he would be seen as the aggressor and the older man would be seen as the victim who has be right to defend himself.
He said, "but I'm seventeen!"
Age has nothing to do with it.
It's the intent and the action that determines the crime.
I love how some think they can get away with anything until they are 18. Very bad misconception to have.

@EL,
It is a misconception echoed by many teens. They believe adults cannot touch minors no matter what bad action the youth commits.

I am curious as to the mother's position in this scenario...

The mother told the son to talk to her first . She asked him to go for a walk, so the guest could finish the project he was working on.

We had a kid get caught smuggling across the border on his 18th birthday! He had been getting no punishment as a juvenile and thought that he was still a juvenile on his birthday! Costly mistake since the DA accepted the case this time and he went to jail.
