This morning, I appeared as a witness
on a probation violation.
The mope spent 14 days in jail
for breaking the no contact order.
He told the judge he'd been using meth
and marijuana in the last two days.
After hearing the case, the judge changed
the man's probation for bench to formal.
Translation please? (Any kind of probation for this guy seems like a bad idea.)

Sound like another day, another dollar there RD. Under supervision would seem to be the appropriate place for him.

@Ed Skinner,
A Bench Probation is monitored by a judge. It is limited in scope, Generally, only a new charge can create a sanction against the person on probation.
With formal probation, a person is placed under direct supervision of probation officer who can make home visits, make impromptu searches, demand UAs, and send a person to jail for any violations of the terms of probation.
@Slam Dunk,
You are correct.
