Gator, on Days, doesn't like anyone driving his car.

Over the last week, after shift, he pops the hood,

and places a sign on the steering wheel

stating, "Do Not Drive!"

Tonight, Edge, in a impish fit,

shut the hood, removed the sign,

and parked the car in opposite direction.

Mr. Cranky

As I slept,

Mr. Cranky 
came out to play:
leg spasming, 
nerves firing,
hip to foot,
I'd kick.
Once.
Twice.
Thrice.
I'd wake in time
to avoid the wall
or my wife.
In the end,
I turned on my side,
intent to ride the rest out 
for the remainder of the night.

Grumblings

Today, I called in sick

to take care of my wife.

It's an acceptable practice.

My sergeant just called

wondering why I wasn't at work.

She assumed I was ill.

No, my wife is.

"No one filled out a sick slip."

I'm sorry.

I called the desk clerk

before noon.

"No worries.

You're not in trouble.

It was lost somewhere

along the way."

It's irksome 

to be unaccounted for.

Duty

In my career, I've been on disability

over a total of eighteen months.

In the last three days,

I've been tending to my wife's cold.

It's the least, I can do.

Replacement Rule

When replacing a Mag-lite's halogen bulb, glove up.

The oils from your hands will burn the new bulb out.

Range

Tonight, at range, 

I qualified with 96.8.

It pales next to Kappy's and K2's

string of near possibles,

but I'll keep the score.

Every Roger

An old patrolman's saying:

In every Roger, there's a Willie wanting to come out.

Meaning:

In every call requiring paper, there's another solution, and it doesn't require writing.

Usually the phrase is said in jest to an officer stuck with a goat rope, but it can be said with pride when an officer explains how he made such a cluster simply go away. 

Mel

Jack.

Jack. Wake up.

"Uungh. Why?"

Mel's hurt.

"Mel?"

She got hit by a car.

"Oh, no."

Ged' up.

I'll take you to the hospital.

"Dog, tell me you're kidding."

Why would I kid?

"You wouldn't"

Let's go.

"Is it bad?"

It's a trauma.

She's in the ICU.

"Will she live?"

I can't tell you that.

"I need a beer."

Not going to happen.

"I don't want to be sick."

They won't let it in the hospital.

"I can hide it."

Nope.

Let's go.

"Okay."

We don't speak on the way.

The receptionist allows me

to bring him back into the ER ICU.

"Dog. You don't know what 

this means to me."

Of course, I do.
