In the locker room,
in the precinct,
officers hang their vests
on the face of their lockers
using old wire hangers
twisted to bear the weight.
Lately, I've arrived at work
to find my vest
on the top of my locker
still attached to the clothes
hanger and locker.
No officer likes
to have his gear touched.
He needs it to survive.
My vest is made
to keep me alive.
I tried to keep from being angry.
I asked around.
I suspected the officer
whose locker is in the corner
to the right of mine,
but he works opposite shifts
and opposite days.
Before my weekend,
on my vest
I left this note:
My vest has feelings.
It is sad.
Somebody keeps tossing it
above the locker.
Please let the vest hang.
:)
When I returned,
a second note hung from vest.
It read:
"I do apologize to your vest.
I meant to put it back in place
when I was done changing .
My nipples have feelings too.....
and the vest rubs them raw
because it's basically inside
my locker as I change.....
I will put it pack when I am done.
Thanks for letting me know."
For the first day weeks,
my vest hung properly.
