At roll call, our LT. informed us it's Hats and Bats week. The circus is in town, the Feds are practicing urban rescues, and Friday is Critical Mass.
The result is carry more gear to the car: Kelvar helmet, PR-24, Gas Mask, and flex-cuffs.
We're squaded up for the week, but I doubt anything will happen. The problem children are at the Democratic National Convention or at Burning Man.
So Hats and Bats are not required to be carried all the time.
Does there then have to be an event to carry those things?
It seems to me that someone could get caught with their "Kelvar helmet, PR-24, Gas Mask, and flex-cuffs" down.
I guess I assumed you had a bulk tube of flex-cuffs in the trunk...for that matter a gas mask...
I can think of a couple of instances that are not as predictible as events that might warrent these items.

It is recommended we take them all the time especially the kevlar helmets. The problem is between a coat, mag-lite, full duty bag and
a lunch box, the other gear is becomes cumbersome and requires and extra trip. It's laziness, but making the extra trip, equal to a city block there and back, is too much for gear rarely used.
I'd keep the gear in the trunk, but them it gets damaged, and risks becoming lost, or missing when the car is taken by another officer or it's being serviced.
The Sgt.s carry extra flex cuffs in their cars.

It's interesting and funny that you can predict a decrease in incidents since the Democratic Convention and Burning Man are currently going on.
