Guest Post while RD is on vacation:
Why do they do it? Why do we do it?
When my husband first put in his application, I fought.
I said:
No.
It would suck his soul and turn him dark.
It wasn't a job done for money; it is a calling.
He agreed, and took the job.
He said:
This is what I want.
I don't want to count widgets, sell things, or work in an office.
I want to come home and know I did something with the day,
to help people,
to be the guy who runs 8 city blocks to tackle the would be rapist.
I said okay.
Take the job.
You would never last as an office manager.
It will be easier to keep you sane as a cop.

Speaking as a Peter from Office Space, I agree with the choice and I wonder at the strength it takes to do it. I wouldn't be able to do that job and I worry for my friend regularly as his fellows that I now know.
Us handlers of minutia take them all for granted sometimes...

How about working your way into the job, turning down a safe cubicle job for a job in a crazy pond?

Nah, thanks, I will leave it to you professionals ;). Already know I would have a hard time pointing a gun at someone, I would probably hesitate too much to be any use to anyone.
I would be okay if someone dumped me in a foxhole and someone was shooting at me but it is that fine line that I would have trouble with.
