Dear Kitchen,
I'm so sorry I made you live so long with that hell
forsaken white vinyl. It was cruel, and may have made
you feel unloved.
In our defense, we didn't curse you with that horrible,
cheap, peeling mess. We found you this way, and we
still loved you, even if you never looked clean. We did
update you with a gas line and new stove when we
first met, the there was that new dishwasher a couple
of years ago, and last year we installed that lovely
chrome faucet. And you did get a much needed paint
job the year before last. Still, as important to us as
you are, we should have done this much, much sooner.
Did it feel good, to have the vinyl peeled off, and to
see your 1970's faux brick linoleum again? Or was
it just embarassing, like seeing a photo of yourself in
bell bottoms? Just for the record, we thought you
looked better in this phase, than in the white. Let's
face it, the early 90's were unkind to you.
When we saw this marmoleum, we thought it would
suit you.
I think we choose well. Your new colors change in the
morning and evening light. Sometimes you look
more grey and blue (which brings out your counters).
And sometimes, you look more terracotta colored,
which accents your cabinets. Now the work's not done,
there is still new trim and quarter round to be installed.
And we still need to put the fridge and dishwasher
into their places, and there is a bit of mending to be
done under the sink (don't worry, I won't show photos
of that, it's a bit personal, isn't it?). But, I hope you're
feeling better now, a bit more loved. You certainly
look better than you've ever looked in our eyes.
Love,
h., Big E, little e, and Sweet G.
PS, Downstairs Bathroom... we're a bit on the outs with
you currently. We'll talk later, after a bit of a cooling off period.
