Changes

 

Per the Chief, for the first time in the department's history, we have a facility designed for training. The city bought the department a ten acre site with a 60,000 square foot building. All future In-Service and training will take place at the site. Training will move out of old North and into the new building. Traffic will move to the old North Precinct and South will open in September or October as a limited Precinct. 

 

 

 

Shooting Drills

 

 

At range today, officers were asked to sit behind a desk, hold a coffee, and solve simple math equations. When the instructor buzzed an alarm, the officers were instructed to shoot a designated threat, stand, and then, engage another threat to the left or right of the first target.

 

 

Timed

 

 

Today, at training, the Range Instructor timed our shots. 

From a standing position, it took 1.49 seconds for me to unholster and fire.

While sitting in a chair, it took me 2.08 seconds for me to unholster and fire. 

 

 

A Shooting Question

 

 

Today, at training, the Range Instructor asked,

"Where is the optimal place to shoot someone in the head?"

 

His answer,

"The nose."

 

 

 

 

 

 

Use of Force

 

Per the City Attorney's Office, takedown and pointing firearms are the department's largest uses of force. He said less than one percent of police calls results in the use of force and less than three percent of arrests results in a use of force.

 

 

Social Disorder

 

 

Per the Chief, the biggest emerging issue for the department is social disorder: homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse. He said these are issues law enforcement cannot fix, but the community as a whole must own these problems. 

 

 

Non-Converter

 

I'm a non-converter.

As a result, the department's nurse gave me

my 5th Hepatitis B shot at training today. 

I'll receive my sixth this Fall.

Winter Range

 

I qual'd tonight.

Despite throwing a round,

I scored a 93.6.

It's my worst score

in two years. 

 

 

Fall Qual

Fall range started at West today.

I shot a 96.4.

I aimed too low at 25 yards.
