On the few rainless nights, an owl's call meets me
as I arrive home to dark house and a sleeping family.
When in doubt, treat
wet leaves like ice.
I'll be working.
Enjoy your turkey!
Last night, I was given the duty of explaining
to a woman how her sister died
two days before Thanksgiving.
Tonight is the first night I did not take
out my hat, bat, and mask in over six weeks.
I don't think I will need them on Thanksgiving.
Black Friday is now a black out day: no more off.
As of today, at 1600 hours,
all shift are back to regular uniforms.
To handle lingering Occupy protests,
the department is hiring 46 officers
and two bike squads for Saturday and Sunday.
All hands on. Back to protest dutyI asked an officer coming in, "How's it going?"He replied, "Great. There's nothing like being spit on."
This week, I scrounged a jacket from the discard bin.
It had belonged to an Lt. I stripped off
his name and rank. The jacket is a fine fit.
